| Spoiler Alert!|
This article contains plot details about the recently released book, Talons of Power. It would be best if you did not view this page until after reading the new installment.
Kinkajou is a small, four-year-old, female, RainWing dragonet. She was a supporting character in The Hidden Kingdom, and now is a student attending the Jade Mountain Academy as a member of the Jade Winglet. She is shown to be very chatty, bright, happy, and enthusiastic. She quickly became great friends with her NightWing clawmate, Moonwatcher, in Moon Rising, although she has a slight dislike of other NightWings because they tortured her and her tribe. It seems like she had a crush on Winter, with her "oh so shiny and sparkly" thoughts about him, thought it might just be an aesthetic appreciation. She is also brave (in certain moments), caring, seems to have a million best friends at once, and her favorite color is bright yellow. Turtle has a crush on her, and Kinkajou was enchanted by Anemone to love him as much as he loves her.
Kinkajou, like all other RainWings, has a serious dislike for eating meat and will only eat fruit. She is also grossed out by the thought of blood and death, and her concern for living creatures is shown when she jumped in front of a sloth during her venom shooting contest with Grandeur.
When asked why Kinkajou didn't get a book, Tui T. Sutherland replied, in a chat, that she used books to evolve characters and make them better and that Kinkajou was already great.
Kinkajou was one of the seventeen missing RainWings held captive by the NightWings in the NightWing kingdom. Kinkajou met Glory when she was knocked unconscious and brought through the animus-touched tunnel to the Night Kingdom. Kinkajou's venom was so weak that the NightWings didn't even bother binding her mouth shut. She claimed that she was the youngest dragon there, and confirmed that there were seventeen missing, three of them already dead. When the NightWings were coming after them during their escape, Glory asked Kinkajou to camouflage herself to look like a NightWing dragonet. Kinkajou fooled the guards for long enough so that she could escape. With her help, (as well as Clay and Deathbringer's) Glory and Kinkajou both were able to escape, and warn the rest of the RainWings about the up coming danger that they had been ignoring. Most of them continued to ignore them and follow Queen Magnificent's example.
Kinkajou participated in the venom contest during Glory's challenge for the RainWing throne and proved to be exceptionally better than what Bromeliad had claimed. During Grandeur's turn, a sloth tumbled out of the trees and landed in front of the targeting board. When Kinkajou leaped to move it away, Grandeur's venom accidentally hit the young RainWing's wing, causing the venom to start burning through her wings. After a panicked venom test with Grandeur, Glory put some of her own venom on Kinkajou's affected wing in an attempt to stop the venom from eating through her scales. It proved successful. Grandeur forfeited, realizing that Glory should be the rightful queen, especially because Glory was related to Grandeur. Kinkajou thereby was awarded victory for the venom targeting, and Glory became the new queen of the RainWings.
Kinkajou has dreams about Glory and looks up to her. She's terrified that she might lose the ability to fly after the venom scarred three black spots on her wing and badly burned her. Kinkajou was the first dragon that Starflight visited while using the dreamvisitor he found, visiting a nightmare of hers.
Near the beginning of the book, Sunny spies on Starflight with the obsidian mirror and some healers are mumbling to each other about wanting to be Kinkajou rather than him, thinking that Starflight's injuries are worse than Kinkajou's.
Kinkajou is mentioned when Peril asks Sunny if Clay had talked about her. Sunny remembers that Clay hadn't mentioned her in a while and that they had both been watching over Kinkajou after her venom accident when he finally did.
In the epilogue, Glory mentions her when they talk about students for a new school on Jade Mountain. She says that Kinkajou and Tamarin need real teachers, not just the scraps of time she has for them.
Kinkajou is a friend and clawmate of Moonwatcher (one of the protagonists of Moon Rising). When Moon first saw Kinkajou, she noticed there were three ink-like drops on Kinkajou's wing that didn't change color like the rest of her body. In the prey center, she introduces Moon to her former "friend" Coconut. She also handed Bandit a blueberry when Winter said that he wouldn't eat anything that Winter gave him. She is considered annoying by their clawmate, Carnelian, and seems to have a crush on Winter. When Moonwatcher reveals her powers, Kinkajou doesn't know what to think and is shocked, and a little angry. Later, after Qibli, Winter, and Moon had fought Icicle, Kinkajou forgives Moon, saying, "Well, yeah, but that was yesterday", and all of the Jade Winglet (excluding Umber) set off to find Winter. Kinkajou is also given a piece Skyfire by Turtle.
She sets out with Winter and the others to go find Hailstorm and travel to the Rainforest, where she meets Glory again. While in the Rainforest, she, Winter, Moon, and Qibli are discovered by a NightWing Patrol, and Kinkajou recognizes Bromeliad, after calling out to her, thinking the older dragon was Orchid, leading us to believe the dragons may have bonded during their time in the Nightwings' prison. Bromeliad was with the Nightwing Obsidian. Obsidian leads them to the NightWing village while Bromeliad flies off to tell Queen Glory that they have arrived. After Kinkajou and the others retrieved Icicle and put her to sleep. Later, while searching for Scarlet, scarlet's alliance, Chameleon, attacks Kinkajou, knocking her into a tree with his tail and seriously injuring her.
The group then leaves the Rainforest, each of them taking turns to carry Kinkajou. Eventually, they reach the town of Possibility, where Mayfly diagnoses her with broken ribs and a skull fracture. She is now in a coma and will not be able to move for at least a month if she wakes up at all.
Kinkajou was mentioned once Turtle and Peril reach Possibility. She was still in a coma, and Turtle went to go visit her with Moon and Qibli, leaving Peril to wait outside of town.
Kinkajou is woken up by Turtle and Anemone, who were casting spells on her. Anemone enchanted Kinkajou's skyfire to heal her, and later added a spell to "make her love Turtle as much as he loved her". The healing spell erased Kinkajou's three venom scars, and she seems a bit disappointed about that. Turtle secretly enchanted it at the same time to protect her from any spells by Darkstalker. He will also not notice her, and regard her as unimportant if he ever sees her. Soon after she is woken up, Darkstalker shows up. He creates a prison for the dragons coming to kill Glory, and Kinkajou doesn't think it's good. As soon as he leaves, Kinkajou tells Turtle "He's definitely evil". Turtle tells her his suspicions of how evil Darkstalker really is, and she agrees to help him spy on Darkstalker. When Darkstalker leaves with the dragons who want to come with him to the old Night Kingdom, Kinkajou follows Turtle. When they get there, and Moonwatcher is attacked by the mop Anemone enchanted, Kinkajou tells Anemone to stop and calls her an overripe melon and a jackdaw. She says she was being a horrible dragon, and tells her to stop using her magic for bad things. Then Darkstalker comes in. He puts Moon under a trance, and Turtle signals to Kinkajou for her to pretend she's in the trance too. Then after Anemone is told to leave and she does, Moon is out of the trance and Kinkajou pretends to be too. Then Turtle has to go after Anemone. Kinkajou flares her wings, turning them pink at the edges, and gives him a sweet smile. After that, she leaves the room with Darkstalker and Moon.
Later, she is brought to Darkstalker's throne room by a sword that he enchanted to find someone- the hidden animus dragon she cared about, Turtle. She tells Turtle not to mind her, and to stay hidden, but he refuses and gives his hiding enchanted stick to Anemone. Darkstalker then tries to kill Turtle, but Kinakajou melts his eyeball, hindering him temporarily. Turtle then, quickly, gives Kinkajou his animus objects, and Kinkajou is sent out of the room as Turtle's animus powers are taken by Darkstalker. Darkstalker tries to enchant her to forget about everything that happened, but because of the spell Turtle put on her, it doesn't work, though she pretends to leave under Darkstalker's spell. Turtle, when being brought to the dungeon, thinks of her when he thinks of dragons that could still save him and the world.
"There's Coconut! Aw, look how exhausted he is. We took gliding lessons together all last year. I bet he's been helping to search for me. Coconut! It's me! I'm back!" -To Glory, upon returning to the Rainforest after escaping the NightWings when she saw Coconut resting in a hammock
"I'd follow Queen Glory anywhere!" - To Magnificent, in The Hidden Kingdom
"Moon, this is my friend Coconut. At least, I thought he was my friend until I got abducted by bad guys for three weeks and he didn't even notice I was gone."
"An IceWing! He's so glittery! And fierce and dangerous! Plus a heroic SandWing! So much drama already! I love it, I love it!" -Kinkajou's thought on the first day of Jade Mountain
"Have you explored yet? There's the most amazing library - not that I can read yet, but oh my gosh, I'm working on it really hard. And an art cave! It's full of all these colors of paint, like, like, like a couple of RainWings just EMOTED all over it! You guys, we should make amazing paintings and then decorate our cave with them. WOULDN'T THAT BE AMAZING?"
“How can you not love it here? Don’t you come from a place with no colors and no life?” -To Winter in Winter Turning
"Ooooo. How does it feel to be related to someone famous? Probably a bit like being best friends with a queen. Which I am, just incidentally, so, I mean, I totally get it."
"Let's go to the music wing next. Or, ooooooh, I heard there's an old GHOST living somewhere in Jade Mountain! Maybe we can find him!" - To Moon and Starflight in Moon Rising.
"I say anyone who is gross enough to eat something that's alive and wriggling deserves to get pecked. You should take those dragons out hunting with you and leave the rest of us here to enjoy our quiet sensible fruit in peace."
"This is the most beautiful part of Pyrrhia. Other dragons would be lucky to live here!" To Winter
"Oh, they're crazy. I had some while the RainWing healers were working on my wing injury. They gave me the wildest hallucinations - flying panthers, quetzals the size of dragons, scavengers with superpowers. You name it, I saw everything." - to Qibli, about smokeberries, after he remarks on Winter making a joke.
"We're eating together! You haven't even finished your hairy smelly carcass thing!" -To Moon, when she says she has to leave.
"Bromeliad is a slow old baboon." - To Glory, about Bromeliad.
"OOOOOOOO, totally invisible to Darkstalker! That is an excellent spell. Another great idea, see? We'll be an awesome team. You can be the idea dragon and I can be the WHAM BAM SHOVE A PINEAPPLE UP HIS SNOUT dragon!"
"He looks like he's posing for a portrait. Pompous Sneerdagard the Magnificent Awaits His Legions of Doomed Enemies." About Darkstalker, and to Turtle
"You overripe melon!" To Anemone, when she enchants a mop to attack Moon
"I've never cleaned my room either! Well, I don't have a room. But I have a hammock! Sometimes I shake it to get all the leaves and bugs out. Does that count?" - To Anemone, when she complains about having to clean her own room
"I love you, Turtle." - To Turtle, after Darkstalker tossed her across the room when she melted his eyeball
"We did it! So...did it work? Is the world saved?" ... "Does the world feel saved to you?" - To Turtle, about being in the lost city of night
"Thaaaat's the right attitude." - To Turtle, after he says that the world doesn't feel saved
"Go away, Bromeliad. You smell like FISH and I don't WANNA train today." - To Turtle, when he tries to wake her up
"Yes, without me. I know you can. Oh, monkey brains - does this mean I'm the hapless sidekick? Blorg, that is so lame. Better than the wailing victim who needs rescuing, though. Make sure nobody writes me that way when this story becomes an epic poem, all right? And I would definitely like to be the hero next time, please. I mean... in my next life, I guess."
"I was, but that was yesterday."-When Moonwatcher was worried that she was mad at her.
Kinkajou is very talkative and hyper. She appears childish, likes to have fun, and describes herself as "smart, but annoying". She was also described by Winter as "annoying". When she was captured by the NightWings, she learned to communicate with the other RainWing prisoners by observing the shifting colours of their scales. She is also shown to be very dedicated and loyal, such as when she backed Glory's petition to become queen of the RainWings. She is also very curious, and enjoys learning about new things and having new experiences. When she is really excited, she finds it difficult to keep her scales from turning neon yellow and pink, just like the other members of her tribe. Kinkajou is also seen that she loves making friends, such as Moonwatcher, Tamarin, Glory, etc. She is shown several times to worry about her friends leaving her, even wondering if Moon likes Sora better than her after Moon leaves the Prey Center to go to the library with her later. Kinkajou is excited when she goes to Jade Mountain Academy because she has never been anywhere but the rainforest. She has been enchanted by Anemone to love Turtle, but she doesn't act any different than normal.
She has large, dark green eyes, a diamond shaped snout, and three small black spots on her wing- scars from when she was accidentally hit during the venom spitting contest by Grandeur while trying to save a sloth. These scars, however, were erased when Anemone and Turtle put the healing spell on her to bring her out of her coma. Like all of the dragons in her tribe, she has color shifting scales. Generally, she tends to keep her scales bright, exciting, happy colors that reflect her over-enthusiastic attitude. In Moon Rising, Moonwatcher and Darkstalker describe her as being a "bubbly RainWing".
- Her favorite color is yellow, which she displays with her scales the most often.
- She views Glory as her hero. Evidence suggests that she sees Glory as larger-than-life in her dreams, Glory is depicted as impossibly large and impossibly gorgeous. She once passionately stated to her fellow RainWings, "I'd follow Glory anywhere!", despite the fact that Glory threatened to kill to become queen. She was also seen dreaming about Glory when Starflight visited her dreams via the dreamvistor.
- Many dragons are annoyed by her amount of optimism and her favorite scale color, yellow.
- She is one of Tui T. Sutherland's favorite characters, as stated in one of her blog posts.
- She is not related to Grandeur as shown in The RainWing Royal Challenge when her venom made the plank melt faster after Grandeur sprayed her venom on it.
- Tui thought of giving Kinkajou her own book but decided against it.
- Kinkajou sees herself as Glory, Tamarin, and Moon's best friend and Coconut's ex-best friend.
- A kinkajou is a species of mammal that consumes nectar and therefore is a pollinator.
- Due to the fact that she was one of the RainWing hostages she holds a small grudge against most NightWings she doesn't know.
- In Winter Turning, Kinkajou is mistakenly called a he, instead of a she.
- Many have said she has a likely chance of dying in the later books, as Kinkajou is quite unlucky, because she is always receiving injuries and being mistreated. Examples include being imprisoned by the NightWings, having her wing was injured by Ex-Queen Grandeur's RainWing venom, being put into a coma with many broken and bruised bones, and being thrown into the cave wall after she melted Darkstalker's eye.
- Despite being unwilling to hurt other dragons, she had no problem melting Darkstalker's eye when he tried to kill Turtle, mistaking him for Fathom. She was the first dragon to actually hurt Darkstalker after he came out from Agate Mountain, despite many other's attempts. Kinkajou also attacked Princess Icicle after she threatened to hurt Queen Glory.
- The spell Anemone casted on Kinkajou to "make her love Turtle as much as he loves her" is most likely permanent because when it was worded, the enchantment didn't specify that it was just on the rock; it just said that the rock would make her love Turtle.
