"Obedience. Discipline. Order. Strength. And knowing your place. These are the hallmarks of a true IceWing. Don't you ever forget it again, Arctic."
— Diamond to Arctic, Runaway

Diamond was an adult female IceWing animus who was introduced in Darkstalker. She ruled as queen of the IceWing tribe during the era of Darkstalker. She heavily influenced the causation of the NightWing-IceWing War with her hatred towards Prince Arctic and Foeslayer's relationship.

She was one of the two known IceWings in Pyrrhian history to use their animus magic more than once, the other being her son, Arctic. After capturing Foeslayer, Diamond imprisoned her within the Ice Kingdom by enchanting two frozen shackles and several spears, ultimately creating the Diamond Trial, or the gift of vengeance.

Description[]

Diamond wore ice-blue diamonds on her ears, neck, and tail band. She had sharp, glittering eyes[1] and a superior, condescending tone of voice.[2]

Personality[]

Diamond was ruthless, cunning,[3] vengeful, insane,[4] judgmental, and placed heavy value upon noble IceWing traditions,[5] but was willing to make exceptions for her own personal feelings, shown when she used magic more than once to capture Foeslayer. She was unpredictable and changed her mind often.[6]

Biography[]

Pre-Series
When Diamond was a dragonet, she got hit with a blast of frostbreath which would inspire her to create the gift of healing.

The Jade Mountain Prophecy[]

Winter Turning
Queen Diamond was mentioned to be the most famous dragon with the name Diamond. She gifted the IceWings, the gift of healing. Later, she gifted her tribe the gift of vengeance, creating an eternal cycle of resurrection for Foeslayer in the Diamond Caves. She was said to have killed Foeslayer forty times herself, to avenge her beloved son Arctic, who had ran away with Foeslayer.
Darkness of Dragons
Moonwatcher told Darkstalker that what Diamond did to his mother was very bad, but she was long gone now, while Darkstalker's mother was alright.

The Lost Continent Prophecy[]

The Dangerous Gift
Tundra thought that the royal IceWing crown was from Diamond's time. Queen Snowfall mentioned how Diamond's son ran off with a NightWing, and Tundra claimed that Arctic was kidnapped by a NightWing. Snowfall said that Diamond was an animus and Lynx added that the crown could have possibly be enchanted by Diamond to induce paranoia and extreme hatred towards NightWings to any one who wears it. Permafrost denied it and stated that Diamond would not use her magic more than once.

Legends[]

Darkstalker

Diamond was infuriated and refused to accept that Prince Arctic merely ran off with Foeslayer, of his own free will. She wanted him to marry Snowflake, a noble First Circle IceWing engaged to Arctic. She then lied and told her entire tribe that the NightWing, Foeslayer, coveting the power of the IceWings' animus dragons, had kidnapped Arctic so that her tribe could benefit from these powers as well. Since Arctic left, there were no more animus IceWings, making all IceWings detest NightWings for "stealing" their last animus. Diamond then started the NightWing-IceWing war.

All the IceWings had believed that Foeslayer had gotten away, but Diamond managed to catch her when Foeslayer took off her protective earring. In her fury, Diamond used her powers to get her revenge on Foeslayer. First, Diamond cast a spell that ordered Foeslayer to come to her, which took effect when Foeslayer took off Arctic's earring, and then Diamond locked Foeslayer up in shackles that could only be broken by the frostbreath of a member in the royal IceWing family. These shackles prevented Foeslayer from ever leaving the Diamond Caves, and made it so that if Foeslayer ever died, she would do so in excruciating pain and be frozen again, only to unfreeze when tapped with one of the enchanted diamond spears.

Furious, she unfroze and killed Foeslayer forty times. Then, before she died, Diamond decided other IceWings could kill Foeslayer too, but for a different purpose: The Diamond Trial.

Winglets[]

Runaway

She first appeared when Arctic went over to Foeslayer and Prudence to explain the situation to the latter. Diamond was hurrying after Arctic with other IceWing aristocrats.

Later, in a flashback of Snowflake, she was inconsiderate of her feelings of the marriage, saying that Snowflake should understand that she does not care about her opinions or if Snowflake does not have any. Diamond also assessed Snowflake's strength, poise, and diplomacy throughout many tests that had been deliberately unfair.

She later confronted Arctic before he was about to meet with Foeslayer. She was initially suspicious of Arctic's behavior because of his yawning during breakfast with Snowflake. When Arctic was thinking about one conversation with Foeslayer, Diamond was angered by her son's delayed response. She assigned two guards to guard Arctic's room, preventing him from seeing Foeslayer, to no avail.

She was implied to have been put to sleep by a potion Snowfox bought from a RainWing.

Relationships[]

Arctic[]

Diamond constantly yelled at and reminded her son about his duties as an IceWing prince. She was judgmental and controlling towards him. Yet, despite her attempts to have complete sovereignty over his life, Arctic eventually fled the Ice Kingdom in order to live with Foeslayer.[5] Diamond claimed to love Arctic in the letter that she sent him, but was still quick to remind him of her stark disapproval of his actions. Diamond also proposed a deal in the writing; if he were to kill his dragonets, Darkstalker and Whiteout, she would forgive all of his perceived transgressions and let him return to the Ice Kingdom with his royal status.[7]

Foeslayer[]

Diamond fiercely hated Foeslayer, and by extension the entire NightWing tribe, for "stealing" her son. She went as far as lying to her subjects that the NightWings were plotting to gain animus magic. When she finally captured Foeslayer, she created the gift of vengeance so she could be kept alive just to be able to suffer, and even killed Foeslayer the first forty times herself just to vent her anger.[8] She also enchanted the Royal IceWing Crown to make every wearer hate the NightWings as much as she did, further emphasizing her hate of Foeslayer bringing animus magic to the NightWing tribe.[9]

Snowflake[]

Despite arranging her to marry Arctic, Diamond cared little for Snowflake. She brushed her off whether she had opinions or not, as well as assessed her unfairly.[10] The two were bitter towards each other due to the arranged marriage. Arctic noted that Snowflake was pretty in the boring, glassy way Diamond liked.[5]

Known Enchantments[]

Phrasing Target Intention
"Phrasing unknown." [5] Five narwhal horns To heal any IceWing who was accidentally hurt with frostbreath, also known as the gift of healing.
"Phrasing unknown." [11] Foeslayer's shackles To bind Foeslayer so that, whenever she was killed, she'd turn into a statue of ice, resembling her living self. Diamond also had enchanted the shackles so that Foeslayer would only age when the ice encasing her had been broken. Otherwise, Foeslayer would stay the same age as long as she was trapped in ice. She decided that other IceWings can kill the NightWing, creating the gift of vengeance. The shackles could only be broken by frostbreath breathed by a royal IceWing.
"Phrasing unknown." [9] The Royal IceWing Crown To give its wearer nightmares and induce extreme paranoia towards all NightWings, ensuring that all future IceWing queens would continue to resent and wage war against the NightWings far into the future, continuing her vengeance long after her own death.
"Phrasing unknown." [4] Unknown To compel Foeslayer to come directly to her, no matter where she was.

Quotes[]

"You're a dragon who knows how to keep her mouth shut. Either you understand that I'm not interested in your opinions, or you don't have any, which would be preferable. I suppose I'll be able to tolerate your presence in my palace, so long as you make equally silent brats."
― to Snowflake (Runaway)

"Obedience. Discipline. Order. Strength. And knowing your place. These are the hallmarks of a true IceWing. Don't you ever forget it again, Arctic."
― to Arctic (Runaway)

"The tribe has strict sleep schedules for a reason. If you have been disrupting yours ― as I suspected after I caught you yawning during our breakfast with Snowflake and her parents ― then I will assign a chronologer to fix you."
― to Arctic (Runaway)

"In fact, since you are so overwhelmed by this animus gift decision, it seems best for you to stay in seclusion until it is time for the ceremony. Clearly something here has been distracting you, but we won't let that be a problem anymore."
― to Arctic (Runaway)

"Which strain of weakness plagues you? Cowardice? Indecision? Wild fantasies of making different choices?"
― to Arctic (Runaway)

"Dearest Arctic,

We want you to come home.

You must have realized your mistake by now. You must be growing to hate that insidious NightWing, the source of all your misery. You know she was only sent here to tempt you away. But now you have seen through her, haven't you? You're starting to realize that your mother was right all along.

So I'm giving you one chance to take it all back.

Come home.

We'll call a truce with the NightWings. The war can be over. You can return to my palace, rejoin your tribe, and all will be forgiven.

And we only have one condition. One small, easy condition that can save so many lives — and give you back your destiny.

It is this: kill your dragonets.

Kill them, bring us proof, and you can come home.

A small price to pay for your life back, isn't it?

I love you, Arctic. Despite your poor choices and terrible mistakes.

I hope to see you soon, back in the tribe where you belong.

Queen Diamond"
― in a letter addressed to Arctic (Darkstalker, page 52)
